Forty-eight Bassett Unified students from Edgewood Academy and Torch Middle
School raced to beat the clock working in teams and individually to solve three rounds of
mathematical equations during Math Field Day on March 1 at Torch Middle School’s Watanabe
Center.
Round one focused on collaboration, round two was problem solving and round three was a
series of questions that each student had to solve individually.
First-place winners representing Torch were seventh-graders Alejandra Ramon, Angela Armaz,
Kerri Khow and Genesis Renderos.
“I was so excited when they announced our names, I was shaking,” Khow said. “I cannot wait for the next round.”
Students were grouped into teams of four. There were 12 teams in all – six from Edgewood
and six from Torch.
First-place winners representing Edgewood were sixth-graders Kyara Delgado, Marlyn Fregoso,
Giselle Taboada Sanchez and Xochitl Hinojosa. First-place winners representing Edgewood were
eighth-graders Erika Ceron, Kenny Le, Joel Ceja and Nguyen Pham (See full list of winners
